suffolk county. hardly a cloud out there. lots of bright sunshine. that's going to combine to make the feels-like temperature 110 degrees and a large portion of the area, the area that's getting it the worst is in pink right now. triple digits for a lot of folks today with this heat index, and it's difficult when we get to several days in a row. it's hard for your body to sort of cope with this day after day. even at night, extreme temperatures. plan the forecast for today, we are in the low to mid-08s, which we've been pretty much all morning long. we're going into the mid-90s with the light southwest wind. we'll tell you when you can see relief coming up in the seven- day forecast. i'll see you then, rob. sad news to report. one person has died after a lightning strike during a powerful storm last night in

in critical condition. >> he got blown off of the bench, and his heart stopped. they did cpr for 30 minutes. he's in icu right now. >> we heard the lightning strike. the ground shook, and it was crazy. >> reporter: the lightning reportedly struck a tree and sent volts of electricity through nearby benches and also through the ground. four men and one woman were taken to the hospital. one of them, a 50-year-old man dead early this morning. the others remain hospitalized. new yorkers are definitely feeling the heat this morning as temperatures rise. people are headed to the water to cool down. marcus solis joins us live. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. you know the expression it's cooler by the shore? not so much here. it is still plenty hot, but people will be coming to the beaches. tens of thousands will be hitting the city beaches.

birds arriving here at orchard beach. we are in one of the hottest stretches or the hottest stretch of the summer so far. that, of course, will put a demand on the power grid. so con edison asking new yorkers to conserve. in some queens neighborhoods, they reduced voltage by 5% as they make some repairs. the good news is that there aren't very many customers at this hour without power. about 200 overall in the entire city. the mayor is asking for new their air conditioning thermostats noloer than 78 degrees to try and conserve some energy. it is a good thing that it is saturday so won't be the strain from businesses running today. nevertheless, there is the push to conserve energy. what better way than to come out to the beach. we met judy who's been coming to orchard for 60 years. >> i will be here until 2:00 and then i'm going home into

tractor-trailers and another car. the crash led to a fuel spill. all lanes have since reopened. new this morning, police are looking for the man accused of robbing a 4-year-old little girl in queens. surveillance video captured the incident that happened around 6:00 outside of a laundromat in astoria. from a girl's neck and walked away. police are looking for pablo escobar who was identified through witnesses in the area. investigators in massachusetts are testing dna samples from a person of interest in the case of a murdered jogger. that person is only described as someone with knowledge of the park where vanessa marcot was found dead. she lived and worked here in new york and was in massachusetts visiting her

here in our area, it has been a week and a half since the murder of a daughter in queens. her father sat down to talk about his mission to find her killer. carina vetrano was sexually assaulted and strangled. phil says his daughter really fought back before she was killed, and he is convinced someone other than the killer knows something. >> somebody saw somebody come house. hillary clinton yesterday released her taxes for 2015 in hopes of putting pressure on

the same thing. she and former president bill clinton made $10.6 million last year combined. they paid about a third of that in taxes at a rate of roughly $34.2%. almost 10% went to charity. mostly to the clinton family foundation. clinton has now released nearly 40 years' worth of tax returns over the course of her career. meantime, she called on donald trump to release his taxes, which he has refused to do though the irs says the candidate can do and release those taxes whenever he pleases. speaking of donald trump, he spent the of his controversial comments. this time in erie, pennsylvania where he called hillary clinton and president obama the co- founders of isis.

for your pets and people. there are plenty of cooling stations around. one important pet heat safety tip. most people know pets can't sweat like we are. they lose all of their heat through panting and through their pads. so it's really, really important to keep them in the shade, keep them well hydrated, and if they start to act weak, get them inside. leslie, tell us about what people and their little furry friends can expect today. >> we have a great day planned families with dogs. we're inviting everyone to come out. we've been doing this event for about six years now. we have various exhibitors that are here with boutiques and stores from around the community. we have a cooling station for dogs and several pools where the dogs can play and jump around in sprinklers. we have a lot of food vendors. we have contests. the highlight of the day are the contests on stage. so many people say i look like my dog. >> i think i really do. >> exactly. >> i'm not sure if we look like

contest on stage called "my dog looks like me," and we have thousands of people lining up that do look like their dog. that is a fun highlight. we have to do a peanut butter eating contest, agility courses, and a day to really celebrate man's best friend. >> the goal we have to remember is adoption of a lot of pets. north shore animal league is adopted. >> we make announcements all week of how many adoptions and hopefully the truck will be empty and all of the puppies will go home. >> you said 6,000, come out? >> that's what we had last year. again, come early if you are 11:00 to 3:00 at overpeck. plenty of cooling stations for pets and people. look at those -- >> a lot of radio stations are on site as well.

broadway. >> indeed. >> if had he known this was nine months in the making, you may have booked something indoors as well. right now, we have an excessive heat warning going. not even a lot of cloud coverage to slow down the temperature climb this morning. i mean, it's bright and sunny out there. another vantage point, midtown you can see the empire state building. maybe a bit of haze here, but clouds are few and far between officially out at central park, we're at 84 degrees. winds are calm, pressure is on the ride. 84 is the top temperature so far. we add 10, 12 degrees to the numbers. everybody's reading hot already. tom's river is up to 88. the feels-like temperatures have been as warm as 111 degrees in tom's river. right now, the heat index is 102. i think they could make the

so extraordinarily hot temperatures when you factor in the humidity. highs will be in the mid-90s again this afternoon. we'll have one more day of the 90s again tomorrow. i think monday we start to ease back on the temperatures. here is the excessive's warning. they have a heat advisory for parts of eastern long island. all of these go until sunday at 10:00. not that the humidity completely disappears on monday and not that the temperatures will be cool, but it will be easier to take temperatures we're expecting a pop-up shower. you keep an eye to the skies and storms develop. as soon as you hear thunder, take cover. don't wait for that. late tonight, overnight, the heat indexes will be in the upper 80s and 90s. so uncomfortable and overnight. then tomorrow morning, right back to feeling like 100 degrees by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. that's incredible.

digit heat indexes. then even overnight sunday moo monday, we still have the feels-like temperatures in the mid-80s to 90 degrees. as far as showers and storms go, we're coming in with clouds around midday around 11:00, 12:00. then quick-moving showers through the early part of the afternoon. we clear back out and then late afternoon to the evening looks like for sunday that we actually see showers and storms pop up. those look few and far between. monday afternoon could also be stormy with showers co getting away for the weekend, it's hot everywhere, guys. catskills, jersey shore and hamptons all in the upper 80s to near 90 with threats of showers as withle. 95 degrees the high today. tonight the overnight low is 80 degrees. it's warm, sticky, and the steam machine cranks on for tomorrow. 93 on the thermometer and the triple digit heat indexes. sounds like a bit of a broken record here. not enough emphasis to remind
